How do you feel about social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter? Are they a good thing?
My Facebook page and Twitter account are for readers. I update my Facebook page with the latest news about my books, while readers feel free to post their thoughts on my timeline. Twitter has also been a fantastic social medium. Just the other day, a blogger was live-tweeting her reactions while she read Dear Adam. As a writer, I was gratified and fascinated to have a window into her experience reading my book.
What’s your most embarrassing moment of your life?
There are too many to vying for that honor and most of them go beyond the pale. However, one that left a lasting impression was when a popular guy in school came up to me out of the blue and asked me why I don’t shave my upper lip. I went from a Frida Kahlo lookalike to a lifelong devotee of tweezing and hair removal products.
What’s your next project?
Forever Elude Me is a contemporary romance novella about a usually prudent woman who meets a seductive stranger during a trip to Istanbul. The title was inspired by a line from a poem by Rainer Maria Rilke called “You Who Never Arrived.”
How do you feel about self-publishing?
Self-publishing is a godsend! I finished Dear Adam in July 2013. Had I gone the traditional route, it would not be available until 2015, if at all. With self-publishing, I have complete control of every aspect of the finished product: writing, editing, packaging, marketing, distribution, and promotion. While self-publishing demands much of my time, energy, and resources, I wouldn’t change anything.
When you get free time on the internet or you go to the library – what do you want to read about?
The first hour of the day is always devoted to my mocha and news websites: CNN, Yahoo, The Guardian, Huffington Post, The New York Times. I also follow many bloggers who post about publishing/writerly news. Then for serious matters, I go to OMG and fill up on celebrity gossip.
