Author Interview - Sandy Nathan @sandyonathan

What would you love to produce in your life?
A book as good as Halldor Laxness’ Independent People. Or maybe a super-bestselling international bombshell fantasy series.
Are you a city slicker or a country lover?
Country lover. We live on an 18 acre horse ranch in Santa Barbara’s wine country. It’s the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen, anywhere, though I could do without the grapes. (I’m a teetotaler.) I couldn’t live in a city for ten minutes.
What is your favorite quality about yourself?
I’m obsessive and driven and get the job done.
What is your least favorite quality about yourself?
I’m obsessive and I work so hard I drive myself into the ground.
What’s the reason for your life? Have you figured out your reason for being here yet?
Glad you asked. It has to do with those ten books on my hard drive and the ones I’ve already published. The books are not just fantasies full of romance, sex, violence, cruelty and the world blowing up.
All of my work has an underlying moral core. My characters are growing and developing human beings. They’re turning into something, and moving toward something. What? The core of their being, the Self, an unexplainable, indescribable something that isn’t a thing at all. The mystery. That’s what enchants me. Philosophical terms for this are Dasein, pure being. The numinous, the sacred. The numenon. That’s what I want to deliver to people.
And I want to take their hands and walk along with them, alternately scaring, delighting, horrifying, and making them swoon with joy.
That’s my job: I’m a transport vehicle taking my readers to themselves, and incidentally, the divine.
My other job is to enjoy my life and find fellowship and love with the people around me. To love my husband, children, dogs, horse, and especially myself.
And you.
